Early Stuttering Intervention
We now offer the Lidcombe Program of Early Stuttering Intervention (LP) for children ages 3 to 7.
How LP works
- LP is a parent-training program that teaches parents techniques to use during structured and unstructured home activities.
- LP uses measurements taken by parents and the clinician to determine stuttering frequency and severity. These ratings are used to determine progress and movement between treatment stages.
- Both the parent(s) and child work with the clinician during treatment sessions.
- LP is a clinic-based service and visits take place at the Bright Start Clinic in Fairport.
Treatment frequency and duration
The LP is divided into two stages:
- Stage 1: Includes weekly one-hour clinic visits. The average length of Stage 1 is 11 weeks.
- Stage 2: Clinic visits occur progressively less often, depending on the individual needs of the client/family. For example, initial Stage 2 visits might be scheduled two times per month, then once a month, then every three months, etc.
Eligibility
This program is available for:
- Children ages 3-7
- Children assessed by a speech-language pathologist to have significant needs in the area of fluency, following clinical and county guidelines
- Children judged by the LP clinician to warrant either immediate intervention or monitoring for a period of time
- Children able to participate in the treatment with parent(s) or significant/regular caregiver(s)
